A home far away from home.
People ask where are you from. I ask where is home for you.
Home life is different for everyone. Home is a difficult location to pinpoint for those who have moved around. Home can be multiple places. Being an international student, I began to build a home in many corners of the world. Home gives you sanity.
I know that international students need a community of other international students. We all empathize an unspoken, indescribable experience each of goes through: culture shock, far from family and friends, living in two worlds, language barriers. As such, when I heard that OBU already has an established International Club (IC), I definitely want to be as involved as I can with the club. I knew already from high school that having that type of community makes the world less lonely and more bearable.
I started as the treasurer in 2019, became VP the following spring semester, and became the president in 2020-2021 academic year. As the president, I came up with events to build community. Sooner or later, I realized that food binds us all together. Free food is also a good incentive to make people come to events LOL. But we had fun together. We had bonfire, lake days, game nights, movie nights. We also focused on big holidays, so we had a Halloween party with karaoke and Chinese New Year Party where the students can learn about each other's culture. We have our big fall break trip every year and host International Food Fest every spring.
